Four cities were named as winners of our Smart Cities Challenge. Follow the journey of each of our winners as they implement our Intelligent Intersections solution.

Frontier Metropolitan Planning Organization (Fort Smith), AR

Once a principal gateway to the Old West, Fort Smith—the second-largest city in Arkansas—is now the center for employment, education, and healthcare services in the region. The city’s Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is home to nearly 290,000 people and is a corridor for nearly 1/3 of all freight traffic in the United States.

Vision For Mobility

Fort Smith, the Frontier Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT) understand that improving mobility through advanced technologies will bring the community and region together. Comprehensive data will give the city’s traffic engineers the ability to measure, document, and analyze events, which in turn leads to faster, more effective actions that provide economically sound solutions. Utilizing our Intelligent Intersections solution, the city will aim to streamline traffic flow, pinpoint areas where traffic-related injuries and fatalities are most likely to occur, and more effectively invest tax revenues.

Austin, TX

The state capital of Texas, the second-largest state in the United States, the City of Austin has seen its population double in the past 25 years to 965,000 residents. The fastest-growing major metropolitan region in the nation, the city expects to again double in population by 2040.

Vision For Mobility

The City of Austin adopted the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP) in April 2019, to enhance the mobility and connectivity of the city’s transportation networks. Envisioning a city that reduces commute times, promotes economic growth, and lowers the cost of traveling in Austin, city mobility leaders are looking to set an example of forward-looking mobility for the United States. Piloting technologies that allow the harnessing of data, and then using that data to improve efficiency of the transportation network, is key to achieving the city’s mobility vision.

Walnut Creek, CA

The City of Walnut Creek is a cultural, commercial, and employment center for Contra Costa County in the East Bay and San Francisco Bay Area. A major transportation hub and regional retail destination with a vibrant downtown setting, residents, employees, and visitors need smarter transportation options to better take advantage of the many amenities Walnut Creek has to offer.

Vision For Mobility

Walnut Creek has a plan to manage congestion and smooth traffic flow by combining next-generation traffic management techniques with new data-driven approaches. The city’s future vision includes “shared mobility hubs,” or multimodal infrastructure to assist citizens in making the first and last-mile connections. Walnut Creek realizes the ability for traffic networks to collect large amounts of data, and the importance of using this “big data” to make informed decisions.

Westminster, CO

Named among the top ten most livable and affordable mid-sized cities in 2019, Westminster, Colorado is home to more than 117,000 residents. Located along the US 36 Tech Corridor between the cities of Denver and Boulder, Westminster is known for its unique places, neighborhoods, development, open space, parks, and majestic views of the Front Range Mountains.

Vision For Mobility

Westminster envisions a future with a comprehensive multimodal transportation network to provide safer and more connected and accessible options for all modes of transportation. The City is currently developing Westminster's first Transportation & Mobility Plan - a community-driven plan to address near- and long-term multimodal transportation and mobility needs of residents, commuters and visitors. The plan will include goals, objectives, and recommendations for strategic actions and investments to provide safer and more efficient, connected, and accessible transportation options for all demographic sectors of our community. Guiding policy recommendations will also be developed to prepare for factors including evolving technologies and advancement in environment and community health.

Results and Benefits

Our software will give cities the business intelligence they need to make better decisions while planning for long-term investments. We will be building a custom dashboard to compile data from existing sources and allow their engineers to drill down to ATSPM metrics.
